It is as simple or as complicated as you want.  There are lots of ideas and techniques out there to help you.   Get to it and........

I love texture and dimension on cards and this background technique provides both. Many die cuts can be used as a stencil also. For this card, I cut a Die-Versions Whispers bricks background and used it as a stencil to apply molding paste. You can add color to the molding paste but for this card I left it white.
